Went over to my friends house up north for the second session of D&D v4.0 with the pre-fab campaign he had. Where we had left off was being camped outside the waterfall of a kobold encampment and we wanted to go and wipe them out. Oh boy, we should have reconsidered it being level one characters LOL.
Our first mistake was splitting the party into three groups to cover all exits. I guess that was the only real 'mistake'. Tactically, I was in the wrong position with my warlord because I was too far away from anyone else to provide my inspirational shouting abilities and healing abilities. It was quite a tough fight, with our rogue and paladin going down to negative hit points several times, and I went down also. Thankfully we didn't actually die but it was quite drawn out in terms of the combat. I think we did ok because had we stayed in one mob, the spellcasting wyrm priests may have had done way more damage with their blast effect spells.
The second encounter we came across was in a dragon pit excavation, and it was actually a lot faster and easier than the previous one, though we got more xp for it LOL. I think we were having a better hang of the system, and our abilities. The last encounter was an absolute mess, and it gave even less xp than the first one at the waterfall cave. The last one had a pit trap that while warned, the paladin still went across it, and ended up being bitten half to death by rat swarms, and being covered in gravy..... I got pincushioned by three kobold sharpshooters, while our ranger suffered the same fate. We both survived thankfully and managed to beat off the rats and kobolds.
At this point, the impressions of v4.0 is that it is easier to play to some extent. The down side is that much of the complexities have been removed. Many of the old v3.5 components have just been completely deleted. So things like having height position advantage is just... gone. So on so forth. It is a pity to some extent because it doesn't truely represent reality of combat etc.
My warlord character is... interesting to play. I didn't expect it to be a fully combat operative type of character, but I didn't expect to be a cleric either, and it seems that is the role I am being pushed into because of how the healing surges thing works.... Tactically, I can do some interesting things, but how our group tends to operate in combat, and the combat scenarios so far just haven't really been to the advantage of using anything special... Perhaps in future encounters and situations they might shine through, or at higher levels anyway.
A point of interest in terms of the human and social side, there was an incident during the session when we broke for lunch. It appears that our friend's mother didn't want us, didn't like us playing in the house where we were playing.... to the point when we the guests had left the house to go to our cars a very vocal and verbal barrage was unleashed..... It resulted in some tears from one person, while all of the children in the household fled to avoid any further warpath conflict..... We then had to relocate house to continue the session. I wasn't really sure why this had happened since apparently he knew that we probably shouldn't have played in the house where we were... but he still chose to and told us to stay there when we asked about moving elsewhere.... But we weren't being super loud or messing up the place..... I didn't really get it but ~shrug~... I just hope he doesn't get into more trouble for our sakes...
