Maiko Haaan!!! (2007, Japanese)
A friend of mine recommended this movie to me after she saw it on an airplane on the way to Japan or back, or was it Taiwan?... Anyway, irrelevant. She said it was very funny, so funny that she actually bought a copy of it when she was in Taiwan (she went to Japan and then Taiwan, so it could have been either way).
The movie is primarily about Geisha. The term "maiko" refers to apprentice Geisha, those who are debuted but are not fully fledged Geisha. The main characters are one otaku and his ex girlfriend, where Kimichiko (his name) thrives on Maiko/Geisha and has his own website about it, and with the ultimate dream of going to Kyoto where the Geisha district is to play "strip baseball", while his ex girlfriend attempts to find a way back into his heart.
To me, it was more of a drama than a comedy, and I didn't find it particularly 'funny' as such. There were some awful cringeworthy scenes in it haha, so I guess you could define it as funny depending on your humor. There were some laugh-out-loud moments too but, it just felt more to be of a drama about the lives and involvement of working as a Geisha. I won't go into more details regarding the movie in case you wanted to see it, but if you are fascinated about the way of the Geisha, then you might want to take a poke at this one.
I still haven't seen Memoirs of a Geisha yet though, but I did read it many years ago when I found it in the Fisher research stack LOL
