21st Shindig

Wednesday was a pretty long day for me, but it was a good day I guess. I got up at 5am because I wanted to get parking on the street near my office as it would be quicker and easier than parking in my usual spot on the other side of campus. With the new year, I also will not have my parking permit, meaning that I will have to find street parking if I want to drive in, or obtain a staff parking permit, which I probably can actually apply for since I will be faculty post-doc staff at that point in time, or something of a similar nature.

I got into uni about twenty past six and went to the lab to start fiddling around with the DataTaker data logging device. I had been asked to take a look at it because our technical manager had tried to used it for the Goro Nickel consultancy project but couldn't get it to work properly. It was actually pretty simple to use, but there were some slight nuances where things were not intuitive therefore you had to use a little more of your nogging to make it run properly. I got it done fine enough after poking about and reading the quickstart manual and once I was satisfied with that I had a mini-nap in my office until the technical manager came in. We went through it (i.e. I showed him) so he knew how to use it in the future and had a chat about what we were going to be doing with it and why.

Once that was done, I went back to my office and a friend of mine dropped by where we went for coffee and a chat just to catch up. I took my stuff and headed off for the 21st after that, being in Vaucluse I didn't expect it was too bad a drive. While traffic wasn't too bad, it was bit of a drive, and still look a while. Arrival near the house, I pulled into a nearby no-through-road to park and legged it back to the house.

The house is really nice. I heard from someone it was ten thousand a week to rent, which comes to just over half a million a year. I don't know if that is true or not, but I guess if it is, then it's great that they can afford to live there. The house has three stories to it, a swimming pool and also a tennis court. It's cut into the hillside in Vaucluse and has an unobstructed view of the harbour and harbour bridge which would make it totally awesome for New Years celebrations. Of course whether they will have any, and if I would be invited are totally separated issue.

Throughout the afternoon about twenty of so people turned up. We played the PS3, Wii, someone went for a swim, and we also played some tennis. We actually for no known reason, started playing tennis barefoot on the synthetic grass court. The sand was pretty hot and it was really abraisive so I ended up with burnt feet and some blisters forming. Of course common sense then prevailed so we stopped and put on shoes after cooling off our feet in the pool.

Dinner was a home cooked affair, with the birthday boy's mother and grandmother preparing some salads, calamari rings, cocktail prawns and roasted chicken wings. It was pretty nice and a lot of food so they went to a lot of effort to cook it. They had bought two slabs of beer and some spirits too. We sat around talking, eating, drinking, playing the Wii some more into the night but since quite a few people had to work on the Thursday, things wrapped up for most around the ten mark. We helped clean up before going.

For me, I drove and took a full car load of people home via Liechardt, Canterbury, Panania and Casual before getting home myself just after one in the morning. A pretty long and rather tiring day. It was lots of fun though and I really enjoyed it. Happy 21st~
