I have received a new computer today for my office use, a Dell Optiplex 755 machine with a 19" (1280x1024) LCD monitor. It boasts a Intel Core 2 Duo 3GHz clock with what I think is 4gb of memory but because it has Windows XP actually loaded,(though the sticker says Windows Vista Basic on the machine) it only recognises some weird 3.something amount.
I plugged it together, attached the bits and turned it on. It took forever to install its networking drivers, and then loaded up into Windows XP (Service Pack 2 by the computer properties information). After that, well, I didn't exactly do much else with it. I was told to call ICT Helpdesk (x16000 for those of you at Sydney Uni) and arrange for a setup.
Called them up, and now I'm awaiting for a technician to contact me back in about an hour, to arrange for a time for them to come and set it up. I don't know what is involved in the set up process but they will probably make an account code, register the MAC address for the network so I can use it on the system for internet, and drivers etc. I don't know how long that will take, but then I get the fun job of transferring data across, and also re-installing programs if I can find installers for them, since this machine, an Optiplex GX270 will be shifted down to the lab to replace a Win95 machine currently in use. There is actually still a Windows v3.1 machine in use LOL, it's just over sixteen years old apparently and still kicking. The power supply for it has been replaced once though and it rattles like mad, definitely on its last legs but they don't want to have to re-write/re-program software for the pump/drive system it is hooked up to so they will keep it going as long as possible. The machine upstairs that used DOS died last year so they had to reprogram for the control switches and that was a pain.... LOL.
It seems they just called me but hung up before I said anything... hmm I hope they call back.
