I saw the Star Trek Movie last night at the Regal Cinema (850 Broadway, near Union Square/14th St).
Before the movie started however there was a lot of movie previews. Way too many I think really.
In any case, the movie starts off with the appearance of a ship on the frontier, through an electrical storm, and they attack upon a Star Fleet federation ship. They kill off the captain and destroy the ship, but not before the acting captain sends off the crew, including his own wife and unborn baby, who is born on the escape pod. The child born is Jim Tiberius Kirk. The scenario changes to the planet Vulcan, where a young child is bullied and disciplined for showing emotion. His name is Spock. At this point, the two pivotal characters have been introduced, and the play begins.
We see the develop and history of the pair through a very quick twenty-five year jump. Then a three year jump through the Star Fleet Academy before the scenario really takes off when Captain Niro takes up his vengence yet again with Red matter.
There is a lot of action in this movie, and some big names are used as the character, such as the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, John Cho (Harold n Kumar asian guy), Eric Bana (Chopper, The Hulk), Simon Pegg (How to lose friends and alienate people, Run Fatboy Run, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) that makes it quite enjoyable.
Throw in some humour and witty lines, a touch of romance and emotion, and this is the boiling pot that is Star Trek.
If you've never seen any of the other movies or series before, like I hadn't, you don't need to worry, this movie is quite history/background-free friendly and I think can be enjoyed by all.
