I received this email that was circulated through the university staff and students:
We have been advised by the NSW Police that a spam SMS death threat is being circulated to thousands of people throughout Australia. It is NOT specifically targeting University staff or students.
The SMS states that you should send an email to a certain web address if you want to live. DO NOT contact this address, it will only ask you to provide personal information.
If you receive this death threat via SMS, you can be assured it does not pose a direct or credible threat to you and can be safely ignored. The SMS is being sent to random mobile numbers by someone in SE Asia who does not have any details on the recipients.
If you receive the SMS
1. Notify security on free call 1800 063 487. That will allow us to monitor the extent of the distribution and confirm it is the same SMS.
2. You can safely ignore the SMS and delete it from your phone once you have notified security.
3. Students who have received the SMS can contact the University Counselling Service on 8627 8433. International Students can contact the International Student Support Unit (ISSU) on 8627 8437 for further assistance.
