Bamboo Charcoal Project

So, I've been trying to do this for ages and I finally managed to get a vessel that would be suitable for making bamboo charcoal. I found some instructions online on how to get the setup done and the basic procedure.

Then I tried it.

Man, it is much harder than it looks. It really is.
Controlling the burn so that it burns enough, but not enough to reduce the bamboo to ash is hard. Then closing the gap down so that it still has enough air to smoulder away, without bursting back into flame, or dying off completely....

In any case, I spent about 4-5hours today all up with two attempts, and I only got a handful of what I would call charcoal. I then promptly sewed together a pouch and put the charcoal into it, and then the pouch into my kendo bag. Lets see if it does anything.

I took some pictures. You can find them on my flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dchiou/sets/72157620708379575/
