Colgate Maxi-White Toothbrush

Well, they recommend a new toothbrush every 3 months, and the last time I got one was the 4th June 2009, therefore being the 13th, it's over 3 months.

I went and had a look and thought I'd try out the Colgate Maxi-White (or is it Max White?) toothbrush with it's "Polishing Star". The cost was $1 more than the Colgate 360° I had previously bought, so $1 over three months is practically 1c a day.

The appearance is different, noticeable in that the head shape is slightly different, the 360 is a regular rectangle shape, while the maxi is more a pear shape/bulge towards the bottom with thinner tip. The bristle count seems to also be lower in the maxi with these soft plastic flat bars that are the polishing bits. There is a five pronged star formation in the middle roughly, with six more in a circle formation around it. I bought a medium brush stiffness since the 360 was also medium.

In a single use, it is very obvious the difference in them. While yes, the brush is new, I could feel that the medium stiffness was stiffer than the 360. This may be to compensate for the lower bristle count, in that the stiffer brushes will scrub harder to remove a deeper layer per stroke, vs more bristles scrubbing per stroke. I can't physically feel the polishing strips actually doing anything during the process. Biggest difference is when brushing the front of my teeth since brushing the tops and insides felt virtually the same.

What struck me the most though was the grip. While the length of the brushes are the same, the grip is markedly different, in almost opposite directions. While the head angle and support leading away from the head is the same, once it reaches the point where your thumb would sit, it changes.

If you read my post about the 360, you will find that I didn't like it. Well, I like the style on the maxi. The curve direction is the correct direction for my preference, in that it comes back towards you. I'm too lazy to actually show pictures so I'll attempt to ascii it instead.

The 360:

The maxi:

IIII___/`` \_________/

For me, I find that having the dip back towards you is much more comfortable for how I grip the toothbrush relative to my thumb and fingers. ~shrug~ Personal preference really.

In any case, it's a toothbrush, does the job hopefully.
