Another weekend pretty much at an end.

Friday I started on some project work at the Electron Microscope Unit (EMU). Doing casual specimen preparation on dental samples. The research behind this is that when it comes to tooth implants, dentists typically find that tooth decay from the removed tooth prior to implant will still occur, even though they have removed all traces of the decay. It is suspected that a 'bio-film' of decay exists around the entirety of the tooth, including the root tip which is usually left in for the implant to be attached to.

The microscopy work is to prepare and examine samples of extracted root tips, and surrounding tissues to see if we can observe the presence of bacteria, which are the causes of the decay. If they can find them, then it provides support for their theory regarding the bio-film existence and behaviour towards post operative decay on implants.

It has been a while since I did proper specimen preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM respectively), but it was easy enough to follow the schedule once I was reminded of it. I guess being trained by some of the best made the difference ^^ The only downside to it is that the process is time consuming. I will be getting paid for it, but I'm not entirely sure what pay rate, nor the amount of time I can claim considering that some of the time is just waiting time.....

Friday afternoon training was once again taken by Peter. I was nearly late since I didn't actually finish up at the EMU until nearly 3:30pm, and then had to get down to the gym and my gear, get changed etc. We did more of the same basic trainings as we did before. It wasn't as physically demanding as the Monday training since we were now aware of Peter wanting us to do 10 repeats of the cuts, so we could be mentally prepared for it. But though it was still good and pushed your limits some. Post training I had a kebab plate for dinner, and then watched Kate & Leopold, starring Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan. For those who don't know what the movie is about, someone managed to make a time rift, and Leopold from the past comes into the future. He then discovers all about the changes in history, technology and so forth, but also in the process discovers love. But with the time rift being a problem in continuity (paradoxes of existence), Leopold must be returned to the past, otherwise the future would be possibly destroyed as is, and thus the problem of the future past with his love interest is in the balance. It's a gentle chick flick romance, and I quite enjoyed it when I first saw it and it has its moments. 7.5/10

Saturday training was interesting. Mark led again, his wrist being better, and we did our usual sets of cuts and what not, but then he wanted us to learn and practice Tsuki, or the thrust to the throat. Generally it isn't really used in Kyu grades because of the dangers associated with it. To the point where you are not allowed to use it in competitions here until you are in the Dan grade. Well, we practiced two handed, and one handed tsuki waza.... quite nervous in some ways to have someone practice on you. I didn't get many misses, though one person managed to miss on the same side three times and left a large read streak across my neck.

We did jigeiko for a little bit longer than usual, and I came up from sonkyo with my first jigeiko against Derek, and pop, hit him square on with a tsuki LOL. Well timed, placed properly. Nice. But then afterwards, he was too wise to let another hit him.

After training, I was discussing with some of the others about inappropriate behaviours. There is a visiting sensei, called Fukuda Sensei. From what I have heard, since I have never met him, is he is rather perverted, sleazy, that kind of guy. During Friday night training apparently, one of our members was training with him, and when she did a cut and went past him, she didn't go fast enough, so he placed his shinai against her neck and pushed her to go faster. Generally, when senseis do this, they do it at the hip/waist level, to promote that you are moving/pushing with the hips and legs, and not at the neck level. But, he pushed her to the point where she actually fell over, face first. While she was lying on the ground, and hadn't gotten up (from what I was told, she started crying, to which I could understand since it's probably not the nicest thing to faceplant with your bogu on, especially if you're not expecting to get pushed from the neck, and no doubt it would have hurt too), Fukuda sensei then proceeded to 'body slam' her, WWF style, probably not with any body weight as such, but then, he pretended to grind his hips against her, a la dog humping. I'm sorry to say but that is harassment. Totally inappropriate, for anyone, let alone a sensei to do, especially since neither of them were 'friends' of close to each other for it to passed off as a joke. Seriously, I was very outraged to hear of it, and I could fully understand if that particular kendo player wanted to make a complaint about it to the police or alike..... In which, almost everyone agreed that it was not right, except for one person in our club who thought it was perfectly fine to do that...... Well, that person doesn't have a great reputation anyway, so stuff em.

Post training, I went to Broadway for lunch, then bummed downtown to Norita's on Liverpool St where the rest of Kendo people were hanging. There was a late dinner/celebration going on with people meeting up at 9:30pm in Chinatown, since it was David, Sam and Myself with birthdays within seven days of each other. So, they ordered drinks, played monopoly, poker etc at Norita's until it was time for dinner.

Dinner was held at Kobow, a Korean restaurant in the city, just up from the French Riviera Ice-cream shop. We had a booking for twenty-five originally, but then came more kerfuffle. I think it was really rude of some people in regards to their behaviour. Having said that they would come for dinner, and that a place was booked, they instead went to another party, one for Fukuda Sensei as previously mentioned, organised by someone not mentioned by name. So they arrived, and having already ate dinner, said hi and buggered off to have ice-cream.....I found that to be really rude..... In which, some of them who hadn't gone to Fukuda's party thingy, also turned up but didn't stay for food, just went goodness knows where else...... gah.

I orderd a fish roe soup, and chum chunchurum souju. The fish roe soup was quite nice, a little spicey, but to be expected when it comes to korean foods. And the grog, well, at 20% alcohol content, it went down with some burning sensation LOL. I had four shots from the bottle, which was 1/3 of the contents, while another three people who sat next to me shared the rest with me. I wasn't tipsy from it, even though I had the four shots in about 15minutes or so.... Probably helped that I had the food and water too.

Post Kobow, we went to Karaoke at this place on Goulburn Street called Show. It's Korean Karaoke, and they also offered movies or PS2 games in their rooms. We had 25 people, and it cost $200 for 2 hours to rent one of the rooms. We got through quite a few songs and it was interesting to hear some people sing for the first time and their song choices. By the time it finished, it was 1:50am LOL, and then a long walk in the cold back to uni for my car haha. At least the souju had worn off by the but I didn't get breath-tested anyway.

Sunday zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

LOL

And that has been pretty much it.

I've been playing Scramble on Facebook, it's like Boggle if anyone is old enough to remember it haha, but yeah, I suck severely at it..... I have really bad word IQ..... oh well...

Tomorrow is training again, and also more work at the EMU, and hopefully someone may have left a copy of my corrections for me to have a look at for my thesis too.....
