When does the line between form and functionality lie? Where design will make something look beautiful, but the object is still able to provide full functionality? I guess this is what all designers strive to achieve in their work and creations.
We have this kettle at home, of a particular brand. Stainless steel body and lid, plastic handle, a round socket base, automatic switch when the water is boiled. The handle has finger grip moulding on the side away from the spout.
I dislike it. When you boil water in it, that is fine and dandy, when you go to pour is the problem.... The spout is high angle, and short length. What this equals to is, steam floods the handle. They kind of try to fix this by placing the finger grip mould marks on the side, to get you to hold it by the edge more, but if you don't have small hands, or if you have weak hands and have to hold it by the middle to pour, you will get scalded by the steam that pours out from the full kettle, especially when you are upending it to get the last bit of water out of it.
Form nice, functionality, not so nice. I prefer those kettles with the handles on the side so when you pour, you avoid all steam contact.....
Anyone else encountered bad form v functionality?
