Due to exams, our regular training was called off, as previously mentioned. One of the people in the beginner bogu group arranged for some light suburi practice at university, however, for me, it wasn't really worth it to go all the way to university just to do suburi. Instead, one of the others, who was a bit dubious also about suburi (since they too lived further out) wanted to have bogu training, so we arranged for it instead.
The parks around their place was a bit limited, so we travelled a little further out to this place called Kelso Park (it keeps reminding me of Scrubs LOL), which was this huge place that had a lot of cricket pitches and fields on it, and a RSL center. The grass quality was actually really nice, there was some random patches that were somewhat more sparse, and some random topography like bumps and indents, but overall, a much evenly covered surface than Tasker Park in Campsie/Canterbury. Unfortunately, it's also a bit of a 'bogan' area and there was quite a bit of rubbish around so we had to make sure we weren't treading on bits of plastic cups or bottle caps etc, but that wasn't hard since we just had to get away a little from the edge of the field towards the actual playing surfaces.
The park is relatively peaceful, large open space, not much traffic into the area due to a dead end roadway, early in the day. The council folk were out chainsawing, and digging holes and clearing rubbish bins etc, and people were walking around for exercise and their pets too. Well, the usual tranquility was ruined by some non-existant, bad, ok, good, and excellent Kiai.
We did a lot of exercises and spent nearly four hours in the session. The weather was warm but not burning hot, about 26°C today with some cloud cover, and we spent the first section in the shade until it was lost by the sun's movements. We did have a few breaks for water which made it better.
What we did in the session was quite extensive (at least I thought so). We started with Hayasuburi Men cuts (doing hayasuburi but on each cut, the cut was actually on the motodachi's men, this ensures that each hayasuburi cut is "good" and a "proper cut"), Kirikaeshi (Slow & Fast), Kihon Men, Kihon Kote, Kihon Dou, then we worked on Maai, Harai Waza, Kakarigeiko with Kihon Cuts, Hiki Men, Men-Hiki Kihon Men, then we also did Power Generation in Small Cuts, Small Men, Small Kote, Hiki-Small Men, Small Men-Hiki Small Men, Kakarigeiko with Small Cuts, then finished off with Kirikaeshi. Throughout the session though I also was pushing their use of Kiai, to be better, stronger, harder, giving it all. In another person's blog, they were talking about their use of Zanshin, and how they wanted it to be like, and that the cut, in it's completeness should have Zanshin like a tsunami, so that their mental ippon matches the physical happening of the ippon in strength and ability. I like this philosophy, though it may be still beyond my current abilities but I respect that person a great great deal. One thing though that we did identify is that breathing is very important (besides the obvious fact you need to or die, but more about how/when you breath, and also the need for good breathing exercises/strengths/techniques when training it). It was a long session, and I think we covered a lot of things that was useful, and I hope that they can remember and practice a lot of it themselves also.
Since it was lunchtime by now, we went to a nearby shopping strip (by the train station as these places are, as observered by someone else I know LOL, e.g. the commercial activities always seem to happen around the train station in the suburbs, and it's always Railway labelled streets like Railway Parade, Railway Avenue, Railway St, Station Rd etc). We tried to find an Indian joint that was supposedly advertised in the area, but couldn't find it, so ended up at a place called Lava Cafe.
We ordered, and I got a Chicken Cesear Salad, and a Coffee Thickshake. Lets say the woman behind the counter must not have know what a Thickshake was because I got a Coffee Frappe/Blended Ice instead of a Thickshake.... No matter, it was still nice, and I had asked for no sugar with it. Lunchtime conversation was mainly me talking (My apologies, as usual, verbal diahorrea gets the best of me) about little 'tales' of lore and culture while they ate their Penne Pesto and had a Lemon Ice Tea. Though, for all of their talk about shovelling food down and claiming to be eating fast, they didn't eat that fast, and well, finished only just before me and I was talking.... hmm, politeness? Or just they think it's fast but in reality it's not that fast?... Anyway, doesn't matter. Dropped them off and came home via the petrol servo and filled up for 118.9c/L, which is like the cheapest it's been in ages... I filled up 14L or so. It was cheaper than my local servo (which is normally cheap anyway) which was at 120.9c/L.
As I was filling up though, I was looking at the servo (petrol/gas service station for those of you who aren't familiar with the term servo btw) and they had a 'car hand wash' service there, with a basic wash for $10. Considering how absolutely grotty my car is, I was tempted to pay the $10 and let the poor bastards work very hard on cleaning my car. Then I thought, heck, it's $10, I can do it myself during the week since I'm not doing anything.... Just got to actually do it. I have to get a sponge though since my sponge, once again, has gone for a walk.... I normally purchase a sponge, wash the car like two or three times, and then it mysteriously disappears, as if there is a sponge theif, or the roaming cats around here from next door nick off with it.... or a sponge warp portal appears and they take a trip home to the Sponge dimension.... So yeah, need a new sponge.
I got home and my parents were taking our stove apart... One of the heating elements (electric crappy ass stove) is buggered in that the temperature control dial doesn't regulate, it's turned into a on/off only switch so the element goes at highest heat straight away, or off. My father having a lot of electrical experience had gone to the markets to get spare parts the other day and was now attempting to replace and fix them, but from what I can hear coming from the kitchen, it doth not go well. This is why gas stoves kick ass instead if you can get it. I like gas stoves, I hate electric. I also had a very large package on my desk from my highschool, and in it was a prospectus and DVD for their new fundraising project. The objective was for a new learning centre and they were trying to raise money to build it. They had held a information night and invited all the Old Boys (alumni) to it, but I didn't attend for whatever reason, and so they posted the stuff to me instead.... I wonder if the money spent on the information night, and the printing of info and postage could have been better spent on the project itself, though I guess if the 'marketing' works and brings in a lot of donations, then it'd definitely offset the cost.... Sorry but right now I can't help out, but once I earn decent amounts of money, I'd love to be philanthropic =) Heck, if the school was still maintaining its reputation, I'd probably be interested in sending my own children there if it was possible, one day that is XD Children be still a loooooong way off methinks =D Gotta get married and all of that stuff first.... hmm, need to work on that somehow.. =P
So, that's the adventure of the last ten hours of today.
