A very generous person sent me a StayCool dance pad in the mail. They didn't tell me about it until I poked them about it once I received it. It has been something that I had mentioned previously after playing on a few different varieties of them at friends places etc, and it is actually a good form of exercise that can be a challenge, and also probably fun if I wasn't concentrating so hard LOL.
The only problem with my setup at the moment is that the floor space in my room is tiny. I have to remove my chair onto my bed to have enough space, and even then, not the entire pad is sitting on the floor with the bottom right corner sticking up against a container I have as my nightstand of sorts. It still works fine since when using StepMania, you only need the U D L F and not the angled corner keys in normal dance mode, while pump mode uses the corners.
Another problem, not so much with the setup but the actual pad, is that it shifts quite a bit. When you are going very quickly, it slides in small amounts and ends up moving sideways, or turning since for me, one side is restricted in the corner. While it comes with five "grip" pads, I don't think they are particularly effective in keeping it from moving. I know some people have taped them to heavier things like boards, but I need to keep it foldable for storage purposes.
Regardless though, I played quite a bit, about thirty minutes through random selections of my collected StepMania songs, and I can sort of stumble my way through light and standard modes on some of the songs. I'm sure over time I will hopefully improve my co-ordination, and it will probably provide even more exercise for me ^_^.

I've used the plastic mats before, just never really got comfortable on them. Metal mats, like the ones at the arcade, just feel so much better.
