This morning, before I went off to work, my internet died for no apparent reason. As part of the usual routine, I checked that our phone line was working, and for once, it wasn't. I was totally WTF at that. After all, having a phone line die isn't actually that usual in my neck of the woods. So, I popped outside, lo and behold, there were two guys about two houses down from mine in each direction (so I was smack bang in the middle), working on wiring. Barefoot (and bloody cold, since it was only 9°C inside my room, must have been less outside) I padded down to have a chat with one of them.
It appears that due to the council having redone the footpaths and driveways, they had displaced the wiring by a little bit. They hadn't damaged it, or destroyed it or removed it, but shifted it off to one side. It was still working perfectly fine, but they had to replace a section of the wiring underneath every bit that the council had worked on, so that when the council workers come back (after more than a month of nothing) to do the rest of the footpaths, the manhole cover for the communications bit would be in line with the wiring and in the line of the footpaths, not to the side. Really unnecessary but, thats the way council work is. Like everything else, and replacing gutters and driveways and footpaths when they were in perfectly fine shape....
Well, at least there were no emergencies that needed the phone line thankfully, since my father doesn't know how to use a mobile, and often my father is home alone, and only has the regular phone line...
