Backtrack.

Monday 24th May.

The Royal Botanical Gardens.

Instead of my usual monday bludge at home, I was asked to visit the RBG in the CBD, right next to the harbour and the Domain (which is a very big patch of grass with some 150 year old Moreton Bay Figs, but a lot of them are dying from old age, so new ones are being planted).

It was part of the Biology elective subject, as a example of how field trips are to be organised etc.

We were guided by a lady called Cathy, and she was one heck of a enthusiastic person.

After a short talk about the facilities, costs, and how field trips are usually run (along with the Taronga Zoo and Australian Museum people) she showed us how to make a very cute field booklet.

I'll try to explain the process, but it might not turn out very well.

Required : 1 A4 peice of paper.
Instructions.

1)Fold the paper lengthways (so that you end up with two long and thin rectangles.

2)Unfold the paper, and then fold widthways (so you end up with quadrants)

3)Fold widthways again so you end up with smaller long rectangles.

4) Unfold 3

5) Rip the folded edge from left edge to the middle fold so that the right side is the open edges, and the left side is the fold line of (2)

6) Open up the folds

7) Fold along the fold (1) line

8) Push the outside edges in, so that it forms a + star

9) Fold the pages together.

10) You now have a 4 page/8 surface field booklet!

It's pretty cool actually, and they can invert it to get another 8 surfaces to write on.

We learned that botanic gardens are cool for teaching and learning, and it's a fairly relaxed day that all kids enjoy. and the succulents are the most enjoyed garden because it's "cool" and they can draw nifty pictures of the plants there.....
