Do you ever get tired of answering the same questions over and over again? Especially when the answer is easily and readily available to the person asking?
I've been on ICQ for a little while now, and pretty much every day, I get a new random adding me to their contact list and wanting to talk to improve their English. Typically, it will be someone from China, or from the Russia/Ukraine/East Europe region, or even Turkey/Portugal.
However, it is actually now to the point where they ask me, where do you live? or, where are you? I say, " in my room" or something like that. Why? Well, if they added me, they must have been able to make the decision to add me, it's not like I added them. They could have taken the time and opportunity to have a look at my profile first, and realise, yes, I am in Sydney, Australia. But no, they don't and always tend to ask that first question. I always check where they are from, and don't ask them where they are from.
I mean, if they want to improve their English, and they are randomly adding people, what happens if they add someone who doesn't talk English?? Well, that is their own dumb fault for not checking.
I have no idea how many of these might be scammers, or worse, and I have for most part just conversed, never followed links, never accepted files, or even voice chat with these total strangers. Some of them have terrible English, which is why they are attempting to improve, most of them are passable for communication purposes but would certainly fail a highschool English assessment while the odd one here or there might actually do okay. I actually spoke to one yesterday, who is an artist, and her English was really good so I think she will be fine for her English tests. There is another who is attempting to pass the IELT (spelling?) so her company (they make handbags) can send her to another division but in Switzerland. There was another who needs to pass an English course to get into university in Malaysia, and the rest are pretty random with no 'purpose' on why they want to improve their English.
I correct what I know if they seem to be ok with the suggestions. I know my English is far from perfect, but I do what I can with what I know is actually correct, so at least I hope they get something from it.
I think with enough time, my empty 'active' ICQ list will be filled, but with just total randoms wanting to talk English. I may have to cull it so those who don't actually talk with me on a regular basis (because there are a few who do) are removed for ease.
