Hi world, another update from the desk and mind of me.
Sunday, rather event-less. I watched three episodes of On Air, upto ep 16 because I only have subtitles up to that. I must say, the last three subs that this group has released weren't as good as their previous releases. I can't really complain since they are primarily translators into Vietnamese from Japanese and Korean programs, so English is probably not their forte as such. In any case, you can still get what they are saying, it just isn't grammatically correct haha.
There has been quite a few developments in terms of people around me and their lives, which makes me think that I'm in pretty good nick all things considering.
A cousin of mine has had something interesting happen to them. They didn't get any sleep for about a week or so, and well, they just snapped.... My unprofessional diagnosis is that they have gone sleep deprived psychosis or neurosis. They are exhibiting a type of multiple personality disorder, however, the new personality is fully aware of the old one, and have threatened the no-more-existence of the old personality. Kind of scary really. I don't know what the official diagnosis is, nor the treatment that is being given, but what that goes to show boys and girls is, you need to get your sleep in decent amounts lest you blow a bolt upstairs and go a little haywire.
A friend of mine is right now in a pretty bad shape. They are going a major health crisis and while I'm not going to disclose what has happened, I am feeling really scared too about it. They didn't really look after themselves very well and have been under a lot of stress lately, but further more, they didn't go see a doctor when things with their health were presenting until now which is more than a month after the initial problems ~sigh~. In any case, they will be getting some test results back on Thursday, and well, I am hoping for the best but it is really worrying me, and they are really in a bad emotional scared state. =(
Another friend had a car accident yesterday. It wasn't major, and they only have minor whiplash from it. Apparently they were on green lights, and were just moving (i.e. less than 10km/h) when a car blew through the red lights and t-boned them. Thankfully, it only took the crumple zone and no-one got hurt, but the car did get mushed in, but not badly enough that they couldn't drive off after dealing with the police etc. The sad thing is, the people who blew the lights lied to the police that they hadn't blown the red light. Grrrrr, I hate it that people can't be honest with something like that..... Anyway, they were actually test driving this car, so the dealership now has a slightly trashed car..... LOL But they paid for a brand new one hahaha. Funny stuff.
I did some more microscopy work today on the SEM505. Now that I have a much clearer idea, I got through them pretty quickly, and I took quite a few pictures, about 70 actually. I will have to go through them soon, and pick out some representatives for each sample. I think that there are some bacteria present, but not much, and probably not really to be defined as a biofilm, but I'm not entirely sure if what I am seeing is bacteria or not haha. Oh well, it's work, and I do get images, clean and clear, so if it's not what they want to see, it's not my fault.
Had lunch, and then Kendo training.
I led warmup again, and this time, I was told to because the other guy who was going to take it shouldn't be because he didn't have proper attire (the gi and hakama) on. I also took the suburi practice too but not footwork. I think that the beginners are getting better, but they really do have to focus, and put in more effort. Kiai is one of the hardest, but yet easiest things to achieve. Why? It's yelling/screaming, anyone can do that. That is the easy part. The hard part is putting all your energy, heart, soul, passion, force, spirit into it. Asking someone to do kiai, it can be loud, but empty, it can resonate but have no force, but at the same time, it can be short, soft, but packing intensity that makes you step back because they have thrown themselves at you through sound. I think that they have to let it be unleashed, a guttural power, the intent to kill really is what kiai is all about.
Bogu training was kind of lightish today, but just as intense. We did the usual kirikaeshi, kihon men, kote, doh, kihon kote-men, short men, kote, doh, short kote-men, hiki men, then the wrist only action with right hand pivot I tried to describe in earlier posts. Then we were motodachi for the beginners to practice their 1-step men cuts on.
One thing that I feel needs to be really put to the beginners in relation to their cuts is, you should be cutting, not hitting. As I mentioned previously in the post from the Picton grading seminar, there is a big difference between hitting and cutting. Cutting involves getting the shinai where it should go, fumikomi, kiai, posture, zanshin. Hitting is putting force into the shinai and smashing it into someone. I think it needs to be put clearly to the beginners that power and speed are not what they should be thinking about right now when doing their cut practices. Power comes from speed, speed comes from timing. Timing comes from good footwork and a lot of practice. It is far more essential to get your shinai control from practice, tenouchi and being able to cut at the right place than anything else. And it hurts your motodachi a lot less. Which is something that they will appreciate, and once you get into bogu, you would understand why.
Then we had some jigeiko at the end. I only got to play two people, one for a good period of time, and then a ippon match for the second. I think I'm getting better, but it's still not very good haha. My health and stamina has improved with my training, which I am thankful for, since I can actually survive training without completely dying by the end. Though I am still dead tired post-training and sleep on the train if I get a seat.....
