Today was another long day.
The usual 6am wake up, breakfast, drive to uni with my bogu. Then, to the office and picked up a copy of my final emendation completed, dated thesis in pdf form. Off to World of Print at Broadway. Hmm, they said they open at 8:30am, it's 8:48 and no sign of life, 8:50am the roller shutters come up and the guy lets me in. Load up the pdf on the computer, tell him what I wanted, printing.... wait and wait and wait and wait, fill out form for binding, pick colours, choose title name, wait and wait and wait and wait, and then finally get a copy of the printed stuff to check over. It's good. Invoice, payment, receipt and I can pick up my copies of my thesis on Wednesday morning hopefully. I will have to remember to bring a backpack and bag to carry them in. Out the door and it's 10:05am.....
Hopped over to the EMU to help Imtiaz out on the SEM. His powders hadn't been completely coated either and well the viewing took a while. His powders were still exhibiting deliquescing behaviours which was an issue for seeing individual particles instead of agglomerates. I spoke to Tony the SEM prep specialist in the department and he suggested keeping the powders in a nitrogen environment until the last moments before coating, and also after coating to keep them from moisture exposure. I don't know if that will happen though.
After Imtiaz's session, I ran through rather quickly my session with the three dental samples I had that were already coated and ready for viewing. The only issue was, I had no idea what I was supposed to be looking for, let alone the magnification size range either.... so I just took a whole pile of random pictures, well, not really a whole pile, just select number, at different magnifications to get a decent spread. It was pretty cool to see blood cells though haha. In any case, I guess Filip will know more about what to look for in them and advise appropriate for the next time so I can see what I'm after.
Kendo training today was typical, warmup, footwork, bogu waza, jigeiko, then stretches afterwards. Peter is really good at pushing people to make them work harder. I played him in jigeiko and man, I was so dead half way through it but he is really good at teaching what needs to be done, like hitting when there is openings, chasing after the opponent, and just being more aggressive in actions instead of standing around. One of the players (the guy who bashed my pinky last time) played me in jigeiko today also, and he is fast, superfast. But once again, he was striking quite strongly with very poor control. My right forearm will be suffering tomorrow for it since it is already quite sore and still right now. Though he did impale himself on my shinai a few times because he didn't break my seme.
Post training dinner was a quiet one, with just four of us going to Sussex St foodcourt. I had a fish and croquette plate for $6 with two cups of barley tea for $1 (I was really thirsty from training still). It was quite nice and well priced. Post dinner desert was at Passionflower at Capital Square, I had a Black Perl, very nice, but also very pricey at $14.50. I'm now back to being broke. In any case, it was a good night out anyway, some fun and interesting conversation to be had.
Tomorrow, or should I say today since I've clocked over midnight now, I have to go and change the specimen resins to 70% spurrs, and see if I can scab some time on the SEM505 before training, before going to training and then home for dinner since my brother is off to the USA on monday.
