While I have been getting some regular exercise with my kendo over the last year, much more cardiovascular exercise than previously with my archery, I haven't been able to train for the last month due to my wrist injury. After getting it checked out by Vivian, I felt that I needed to get back on track before I got too out of shape, especially if I have been attending high energy intake events like wedding (it is simply too rude to refuse the food/drinks on such an occasion with a poor excuse like diet purposes). Now with the Christmas and New Year season rapidly approaching, I can also imagine much more consumption of normally unhealthy amounts of food products.
To combat this, I thought it might be good if I went for a run now and then to just keep my stamina up and work some exercise into my life in lieu of kendo. Especially since that we don't have training due to some booking miscommunications which has seen our venue unavailble to us until we can sort out an alternative.
I don't actually have running shoes. The only shoes I have worn in the last few years are my steelcap boots and dress shoes, which both are mildy inappropriate for jogging. I asked my mother if my brother who went to the U.S. left any behind and she dug some out for me but they were pretty ratty in condition (probably why he left them here LOL) and then my other brother was generous enough to give me a pair of shoes he had bought but not yet use. They fit ok for me, a little snug but I suspect that will stretch a little with use.
So this morning I woke up and looked outside. It was pretty bleak and grey. I decided I still needed to go for a run so I put on the shoes, stuck my iPod onto my armband, put on my sunnies (just so I could at least look the part) and off I went.
I decided on a square block route for the jog since I didn't really have any idea of my fitness level at this point. I knew it was roughly four hundred or so meters to the train station, and if I did a square lap to the station, around the back, and then home from the other direction than I set off it would form a rectangular path. Overall the jog was only a small one and a half kilometers or so.
Performance wise, I did it in about fifteen minutes but I had to wait at one major intersection for the lights since I seriously did not want to get run over. My knees initially felt funny from the running impact and my right ankle also was feeling a bit twingey. Once I got to the station and up then over the rail overpass (it's one of those sets of steps that have to clear the train powerlines on both sides of the station and tracks) I think they decided to stop complaining since I was still running. In terms of breathing, I was puffing a little by the station, but while breating quite heavily by the time I got home, I felt I probably could have gone a little bit more before completely packing it in. My heart rate was going pretty crazy and I didn't have a watch to measure the pulse though. My chest was hurting a little but not more than had I been going flat out in a shiai or waza training at kendo so that was a very positive sign for me.
Once I got home and I stopped running, I realised I hadn't actually been sweating too much, but once I had stopped moving, I was sweating like mad for about five minutes as I caught my breath standing around. I think my recovery speed is also in decent shape since about ten minutes later, while my legs still felt a bit funny, my breathing was pretty much normal and I had completely stopped sweating.
See how I feel tomrrow if I will repeat the jog. If I do it regularly enough, I guess that would be good for me right? So long as I don't damage myself somehow first.

what music do u listen to?
careful with the chest pain...
whatever is on my iPod
As for chest pain, it's not like a heart attack, just from breathing and trying to over-expand my ribcage to get more air in.
